Notre-Dame Cathedral and Shakespeare and Company
From Place Dauphine, head towards the iconic Notre-Dame Cathedral. Although currently undergoing restoration, its grandeur is still palpable. Surrounding the building is a fascinating story of the restoration with photos, detailing the progress and efforts involved. Recently, the new spire has been added to the cathedral, and the works are estimated to be finished later this year. Just across the river, immerse yourself in literary history at the legendary Shakespeare and Company bookstore. This English-language independent bookstore has been a beloved haunt for writers and readers alike since 1951.
Rue Mouffetard and its Market
For a taste of Parisian life, head to Rue Mouffetard in the 5th arrondissement. This lively street is home to one of the oldest street markets in Paris. Panthéon and Église Saint-Étienne-du-Mont
A short walk from the gardens leads you to the Panthéon, a neoclassical mausoleum where many of France’s most illustrious figures, including Voltaire, Rousseau, and Marie Curie, are interred. The grandeur of the building and the historical significance of those buried here make it a must-visit. Near the Panthéon, don’t miss Église Saint-Étienne-du-Mont, a beautiful church that houses the tomb of Saint Geneviève, the patron saint of Paris. The church’s unique architecture and intricate interior make it a captivating stop on your walk. You might even recognize it from scenes in Woody Allen’s movie Midnight in Paris.
The Red Wheelbarrow and Luxembourg Gardens
Next, make your way to the stunning Luxembourg Gardens in the 6th arrondissement. Before you enter the gardens, be sure to visit The Red Wheelbarrow at 11 rue de Medicis, an independent English bookstore just opposite the Luxembourg Gardens. The owner, Penelope, is very sweet and often hosts events with authors. It’s a great spot to buy a fun gift to bring back or get a book to enjoy in the gardens. If you have children with you, visit The Red Balloon at 9 rue de Medicis, a children’s bilingual bookstore. The beautiful Luxembourg Gardens offer a perfect blend of manicured gardens, statues and fountains. Take a leisurely stroll or simply relax by the pond, watching the children sail their toy boats.
Lunch in Saint-Germain-des-Prés
As you move into the 6th arrondissement, you’ll find yourself in the chic Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighborhood. If you want a quick pit stop, go to Cosi, located at 54 rue de Seine. It is a small Italian spot serving delicious sandwiches on house-made focaccia and wine. For a more leisurely lunch, try Brasserie Lipp, a renowned establishment situated just opposite Café de Flore. This elegant restaurant is all about tradition, with waiters swiftly serving timeless French cuisine to delighted patrons. The energetic service and bustling atmosphere are a performance in their own right, making dining here an experience to remember. You can find Brasserie Lipp at 151 Boulevard Saint-Germain, 75006.
